Neeraj Chopra continued his golden run of form with his first gold medal of the season at the Kuortane games. The Tokyo Olympics Gold Medalist secured a first-place finish with a throw of 86.69m. The winning throw was Neeraj's only legal throw of the evening.
During the 3rd throw, he also suffered a nasty fall as the rainy conditions on the runway in Finland made it tough for all athletes on Saturday (June 18). Ultimately, Neeraj battled the odds to secure the gold by a narrow margin as Trinidad's Keshorn Walcott finished second with a throw of 86.64 and took the silver medal home. Meanwhile, the Bronze medal was won by Grenada's Anderson Peters with a best throw of 84.85 meters.
Following Neeraj's incredible victory, India's Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Thakur led the reactions and hailed his victory. Saturday's win has marked has extended an extremely successful return to the sport for Neeraj. Following the triumph in Tokyo last year, India's first-ever Olympic gold medalist in Athletics had stayed away from competitive sport for 10 months. On his comeback on Tuesday (June 14), he broke the National record and won the silver medal at the Paavo Nurmi Games with a throw of 89.30m.
Neeraj will be next seen in action at the Stockholm Diamond League on June 30 which is likely to be his final preparation for the World Championship that will take from July 15-24 in Eugene, USA.
