Chennai: Narcotics worth Rs 111.41 crore confiscated at airport; 2 apprehended

Over 10 kg of narcotics worth Rs 111.41 crore concealed in the cabin baggage were confiscated at the airport here in two different incidents. Two passengers including a woman from Angola have been arrested by the Customs Department in this connection.

Chennai: In yet another major crackdown against drug peddlers, over 10 kg of narcotics worth Rs 111.41 crore concealed in the cabin baggage were confiscated at the airport here in two different incidents. Two passengers including a woman from Angola have been arrested by the Customs Department in this connection, PTI reported.
In the first incident on August 11, the authorities, based on tip-off, confiscated cocaine and heroin concealed in the cabin baggage, shoes and slippers of a passenger on his arrival from Addis Ababa. The drugs weighed 9.59 kg worth Rs 100 crore, a press release from Principal Commissioner of Customs stated.
Similarly, in the second incident on August 9, cocaine weighing 1.18 kg, valued at Rs 11.41 crore, was found in the bag of the Angola national.
Both the passengers were arrested in this connection and an investigation was on. The seizure of cocaine and heroin worth over Rs 100 crore was made for the first time at the city airport.
Recently, in July 2022, over one kg of banned drug Heroin worth Rs 8.86 crore was seized by the authorities. A citizen from Tanzania was arrested in this connection.
Acting on specific information, the department officials intercepted the passenger who arrived here from Entebbe, Uganda, on July 14. The officials during the search had recovered the drug which was in capsule form, PTI reported.
Notably, the passenger had swallowed 86 capsules and on extraction, the drug weighing 1.26 kg worth Rs 8.86 crore was recovered from him.
