EV Fires: Govt forms an expert committee to watch over EV safety standards

In a recent session of Lok Sabha the minister shared a written reply to a question on EV safety stating that the expert committee has been constituted to keep a close eye on the safety standard of EVs. This expert committee has been bestowed upon with the responsibility of tackling the safety-related issues pertaining to electric vehicles.

The Indian government has become vigilant about the safety standards of electric vehicles and to keep a close watch on the safety standards of the electric vehicles has established a committee of experts to tackle the safety-related issues, as stated by Krishan Pal Gurjar, Minister of State for Heavy Industries said on Tuesday.
In a recent session of Lok Sabha the minister shared a written reply to a question on EV safety stating that the expert committee has been constituted to keep a close eye on the safety standard of EVs. This newly formed committee comprises experts from Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) Visakhapatnam, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bengaluru.
This expert committee has been bestowed upon with the responsibility of tackling the safety-related issues pertaining to electric vehicles.
The minister also informed the members of the Lok Sabha that three electric vehicle manufacturers have issued recalls of their electric vehicles in-line with the issues concerning the safety of their vehicles.
In April Ola Electric, Pure EV and Okinawa had issued recalls for their electric vehicles. Okinawa issued a recall on April 16th, recalling 3215 units of their EVs. Followed by Pure EV which issued a recall on 21st April recalling 2,000 units of their EVs. Then Ola Electric issued a recall on the 23rd April recalling 1,441 units of their EVs.
Commenting on the current safety standards of the EVs, Krishan Pal Gurjar said "Testing of components for EVs is done as per relevant standards, as specified in Rule 126 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rule, 1989 to ensure compliance".
