New Delhi: Union Home minister Amit Shah on Friday said that Congress leaders' protest in black clothes was a message against Ram temple foundation-stone laying by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this day in 2020.
"Congress chose this day for the protest and wore black clothes because they want to give a subtle message to further promote their appeasement politics as on this day Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya," Shah said
Congress leaders and workers earlier today staged nationwide protests over price rise, fuel price hike, GST on essential items among other issues. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi and several other party MPs were also detained by the Delhi police during the protest. They were released later.
Shah said that issues of ED and price rise are only excuses and that the Congress especially chose black clothes because August 5 is Ram temple ceremony anniversary.
“Congress should be responsible and must co-operate as per the law. The matter is going on the basis of complaints that have been filed. As far as ED is concerned, everybody should respect the law and order situation in the country,” Shah said.
The Congress, however, dismissed as "bogus" Shah linking its protests to Ram temple foundation day, and said its stir against price rise has clearly hit home.
The party further said that Shah's remarks was a desperate attempt to "divert, polarise and give a malicious" twist to the protest.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday temporarily sealed the office space of Young Indian (YI) company in the premises of the Congress-owned newspaper National Herald in Delhi as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation.
The ED has also interrogated Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in connection with the case. The two are among the promoters and majority shareholders in Young Indian.
