An era came to an end as Australian skipper Aaron Finch bid adieu to One-day international cricket on Sunday, September 11 after playing his last game in the format against New Zealand. Finch, who has been facing a run drought for more than 12 months in limited overs, but especially in the 50-over format, announced that it was time for him to move away.
Finch received a grand 'Guard of Honour' from the New Zealand players, led by skipper Kane Williamson in Cairns as he walked out to bat alongside new opening partner Josh Inglis. Finch, who has been in horror form in the last 7 matches scoring just 26 runs at an average of 3.71, added just five more runs to his tally before Tim Southee's straighter delivery went between his bat and pad and hit the stumps.
Finch walked off to a standing ovation from the local crowd as he ended his 146-match ODI career with the bat. However, Finch is not done just yet as he will be hoping to lead his side in the field and achieve a clean sweep over their trans-Tasman rivals by winning the final ODI.
Finch amassed 5406 runs at an average of 38.89 scoring 17 centuries and 30 half-centuries. While Finch made a solid opening pair with David Warner, which they will continue to be in the T20Is, he is only the 7th cricketer to captain Australia in more than 50 ODIs. In 55 matches under him, Australia won 30 games, while losing 24. Finch, who became the first male captain to lead Australia to a World T20 trophy last year, would hope to defend the title at home this year.
Australia won the first two games rather easily even though they found themselves in trouble in patches in those games as well. The surface at Cazaly's Stadium has been conducive to the bowlers and hence the batters have struggled to play freely.
Inglis after scoring a boundary got out to Boult before Southee claimed Finch's wicket. The dependable duo of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith stitched a 60-run stand to help their side recover.
