Chennai: In a move to aid the visually impaired passengers, the Southern Railway on Monday installed Braille navigation maps at Chennai Central Railway station and Egmore station. These navigation maps will help the visually impaired passengers travell on their own.
These Braille signs will also have QR codes to facilitate the visually impaired passengers who prefer audio directions. Southern Railway released a statement that said that the QR codes are provided on the Braille boards/signages and can be scanned with smartphones. This will activate audio messages which will guide the passengers to the destinations where they intended to go.
Being 3X3 feet in dimensions these maps have been put up at the entry points of the two railway stations. It will help guide the passengers and help them find their way across the station to access facilities like ticket counters, toilets for differently-abled persons, concourse areas, water taps, waiting rooms, cloakrooms, foot over bridge, and entry and exit points of platforms.
"The installation of Braille boards in Chennai and Egmore railways stations is a welcome step by the Railways. The visually impaired will now be able to navigate through the station to reach the platforms where they are headed as well as get directions to reach toilets or to places they intend to travel within the station. A great initiative by the Southern Railway," Dr. Ramani P. Mathai, who works with the visually impaired, said while speaking to IANS.
Ensuring the safety of the visually impaired passengers, the Railway department has already laid checkered tiles at the edge of platforms to make it safer and more secure for such passengers. Stainless steel handrails have also been provided in the FOBs for easy movement of visually challenged passengers.
