Coming into the series against Australia, all eyes were on Jasprit Bumrah as he is returning to the national team after a long absence that saw him miss the 2022 Asia Cup due to a back injury. However, Bumrah is not part of the playing XI in the series opener on Tuesday (September 20) at the IS Bindra, Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma explained at the toss that Bumrah has been given a break for this game and will play the second and third game of the series. However, Harshal Patel is back in the playing XI after missing both the West Indies series and Asia Cup due to injury.
"Bumrah is not playing, he will take a game's break and probably come back in the second and the third game," said Rohit at the toss ceremony. Dinesh Karthik beat Rishabh Pant for a spot in the playing XI and will be India's wicket-keeper.
Australia have won the toss and chosen to bowl first. Explosive batter Tim David is making his debut for the Aaron Finch-led side. Australia are without several first-choice players for the game with David Warner rested for the series. Meanwhile; Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, and Mitchell Marsh have not travlled due to some injury issues.
India skipper Rohit stated that the series is a chance for the team to get back on track after the Asia Cup debacle. "Looking at what happened in the Asia Cup, we had a chance to reflect on where we went wrong. This gives us an opportunity to correct ourselves," said Rohit at the toss.
