Mumbai: More than a dozen inmates in Taloja jail of Navi Mumbai have approached various courts asking for mosquito nets fearing the approaching dengue and malaria season.
Jail authorities denied the facility to the prisoners citing safety reasons saying that the strings of mosquito nets are strong and can be used by the prisoners to harm themselves or other inmates, reported The Indian Express.
The jail authorities had seized the mosquito nets already being used by the prisoners last month. This caused friction among the prisoners and the jail authorities.
Prisoners insisted that mosquito nets were the primary form of protection against the menace of the flying insects. The discord grew so much that one of the inmates even approached a police station in Kharghar, asking to register a complaint that jail authorities committed theft of mosquito nets, that cost him 620 rupees each.
Some other inmates also approached the courts to get back their mosquito nets and buy new ones.
Another prisoner approached the court saying he was allowed to use it until recently and till now no such safety-related incidents have happened so far.
The court asked the prisoner why the inmates were not using mosquito coils, repellants, and other such alternatives to deal with the mosquito menace? To which the prisoner petitioner had replied that he had an asthma problem and coils were only effective temporarily.
Taloja has also been a Malaria-prone area for years now. According to a report given by the jail authorities to the court in 2014, a number of accused had suffered from malaria. Jail authorities have said that they are exploring and ensuring alternatives to mosquito nets but won’t allow it due to safety reasons.
The courts are likely to decide on the mosquito menace pleas later this week.
