Seasonal allergies in children can be detrimental to their overall growth

New Delhi: Weather change comes with its positives and negatives. While a change in season indicates new life, many people, mostly children fall sick, hindering their growth. Seasonal allergies, also known as Hay Fever, are periodic ailments that affect children more because of their weak and developing immune systems.
Most of the allergy symptoms happen when in the spring season trees and plants release pollen in the air to fertilize, and these allergens, containing chemicals invade the bloodstream. During monsoons, many bacteria and fungi cause allergies, since they grow fast because of humidity.

Signs and symptoms to look out for

Seasonal allergies can start at any age above two years. In children seasonal allergies can be more than just an annoyance, as some of the outcomes can be:
  1. Cold and cough
  2. Sneezing
  3. Itching and rashes
  4. Congestion in the nasal area and chest
  5. Fever and dizziness
  6. Red eyes or conjunctivitis
  7. Runny nose
  8. Asthma

Ways to minimise triggers and treat allergies

There are a few simple ways through which you can prevent allergies from spreading fast:
  1. Wash your child’s face and hands with water and soap when they come back from the outdoors. Most germs enter their system through hands.
  2. Children who suffer from severe allergies should restrict their outdoor movements to stop the spread
  3. Dry the clothes properly since pollen tends to stick
  4. Make sure to bathe children at night before their bedtime to minimise the effect of allergens.
Allergies can be lifelong conditions for some and if not curbed well in time can lead to asthma, bronchitis, and other lung-related problems. Most children outgrow their allergies with time but it is important to keep them safe and protected from recurrent seasonal reactions.
