Pune: Two people test positive for Omicron sub-variant BA.5; overall BA. 4 and BA.5 cases at 160 in Maharashtra

Two people residing in rural parts of Pune have tested positive for Omicron subvariant BA.5 Both the patients hail from outside of Maharashtra and tested COVID-19 positive at the routine screening of Pune airport while they were returning from Dubai.

Pune: Two people have tested positive for Omicron sub-variant BA.5 in Pune. The state health department informed the same adding that the samples of both patients were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.
Both patients hail from outside Maharashtra but are staying in rural parts of Pune for professional reasons.
They tested Covid-19 positive at the routine screening of Pune airport, between the July 3-9 period, while they were returning from Dubai. They were asymptomatic and recovered fully at home isolation.
These two cases have taken the overall tally of BA.4 and BA.5 cases in Maharashtra to 160.
The health department further added that the district-wise BA.4 and BA.5 include 93 in Pune, 51 in Mumbai, Thane has 5, Nagpur and Palghar have 4 each while Raigad has 3 cases of BA. 4 and BA.5 variant.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Friday reported 2,515 Covid-19 cases taking the tally to 80,29,910. Six fatalities due to the coronavirus infection were reported taking the death toll to 1,48,051, an official said.
The recovery count increased by 2,449 in the last 24 hours.
