Kolkata: In an attempt to curb drunk-driving cases in Kolkata, Lalbazar (police headquarters) has directed all police stations of the city to deal with traffic offenders seriously. The police stations have been asked to follow all legal procedures and before granting bail to traffic violators from the stations, legal evidence has to be collected.
The new instructions further advised the traffic and police personnel to try and produce the accused in cases where the offence is of a serious nature, in a court and act according to the orders rather than making decisions based on their own judgment.
These fresh guidelines from Lalbazar, which is led by commissioner Vineet Goyal, come in view of the increased number of road accidents in the city lately. More than 20 fatal accidents have been recorded in the last two months.
Earlier this month, after an accident involving a drunk auto driver at Rashbehari Crossing, Lalbazar had decided to carry out special raids against drunk drivers in the morning on a “need basis”. According to police personnel, these special raids are usually carried out during Holi and other major festivals when people drink during the day. The primary goal was to inspect commercial vehicles.
The accused was found to be driving his auto with passengers in it, after consuming alcohol eight times the permissible limit for driving. The Tollygunge traffic guard nabbed the driver after a passenger who had found him reeking of alcohol complained to the officials.
In a similar move on Saturday ( June 25), the police also started a crackdown on lane violators on Howrah Bridge to prevent head-to-head collisions between buses.
