Kolkata: KMC inaugurates its new control room with multiple screens to monitor waterlogging sites in the city

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation inaugurated a new control room with 12 screens on Monday. The corporation's upgrade in the system will help in monitoring the vulnerable locations in the city during rain activity. The monitor screens will also display water levels in the sumps of the drainage pumping stations of KMC.

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) inaugurated a new control room at its headquarters in Esplanade on Monday. The control room which has 12 screens aims to reduce the response time by engineers during heavy rain situations which lead to waterlogging in the city.
The multiple screens will not only facilitate the projection of images/footage from various parts of the city at once but, will also display water levels in the sumps of the drainage pumping stations of KMC.
To monitor waterlogging in the city the KMC has sensors fitted in the sumps that will send data on the level of water on a real-time basis. If the water in the sump will rise above normal levels known to the KMC officials, the control room will alert about waterlogging in the area.
An official said that depending on the level of water in the sump, engineers will decide how many pumps should be operated.
The old control room had one screen with no provision for display of the water level in sumps. In fact, to get information about the water level in the sumps, the engineers in charge of the drainage pumping stations had to be called up. Officials at the KMC headquarters will now be able to see the data from all stations.
Kolkata police installed 100-odd CCTV cameras across the city and the images and footage can also be beamed on the screens of the KMC control room. The KMC has also installed sensors in about 20 waterlogging-prone areas in the city.
The work of setting up the new control room was initiated about three months ago.
