India's Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra did not seem to miss a beat on his return to action in Norway. After his national record-breaking performance at the Paavo Nurmi games, where he won a silver medal, Chopra won a gold medal at the Kuortane Games. He registered the winning throw in his very first attempt. His first throw of 86.69 metres was enough for him to secure a gold medal at Kuortane leaving behind the Trinidadian 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott (86.64) and 2019 world champion, Grenada's Anderson Peters (84.75).
The weather conditions in Kuortane wasn't ideal for the javelin throwers as the track had become slippery due to the incessant rains. The running area was wet and it was risky for all the athletes as they come in running with full throttle. Hence, they could not land their footing, and the chance of a bad fall was quite high. This is exactly what happened with Neeraj Chopra. Right after he completed his third attempt, the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist fell on his shoulder quite badly.
The impact of the fall was such, that he did not take his final three attempts. However, Neeraj Chopra cleared the air ruling out chances of any injury, thus letting Indian fans heaving a sigh of relief. "Tough conditions with the weather, but happy to get my first win of the season here at Kuortane. I'm feeling good and looking forward to kicking off my Diamond League season at @BAUHAUSGALAN on the 30th. Thank you for all the messages and support," he tweeted.
Even the Athletics Federation of India provided a positive update on the fitness of Neeraj Chopra on Twitter. ""News from Kuortane: All well with @Neeraj_chopra1 after that bad slip on his third attempt. Nothing to worry. Well done #NeerajChopra, congrats for one more top class performance," the tweet read.
India's golden boy will now be in good momentum heading into the Diamond League, having clinched two successive medals in Finland.
