New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will on Friday submit his nomination papers for the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president elections.
Tharoor will visit 24, Akbar Road at 12:15 pm today, said news agency ANI.
Later, at 1:00 pm, he will conduct a press conference at his official residence, which is 97, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi.
On Thursday, Tharoor met with another Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who is also running for the top position.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP welcomed Singh's candidacy and said they would treat it as a friendly contest.
"Received a visit from @digvijaya_28 this afternoon. I welcome his candidacy for the Presidency of our Party. We both agreed that ours is not a battle between rivals but a friendly contest among colleagues. All we both want is that whoever prevails, @incIndia will win!," tweeted Tharoor.
In response to Tharoor's tweet, Singh said,"I agree @Shashi Tharoor we are fighting the communal forces in India. Both believe in the Gandhian Nehruvian Ideology and shall fight them relentlessly, come what may. Best wishes."
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who was said to be another contender for the party's presidency, on Thursday announced that he will not run.
"I met Rahul Gandhi in Kochi and requested him to fight the polls (for Congress President). When he didn't accept, I said I'll contest but now with that incident (political crisis in Rajasthan), I have decided not to contest the elections," said Gehlot.
Gehlot made the remarks after meeting with Congress' interim chief Sonia Gandhi at her residence at 10, Janpath in the national capital.
