Need to get our act together: Rohit Sharma not dismissive of death bowling concerns as T20 World Cup nears

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma admitted that the Men in Blue have to get their act together as far as their death bowling is concerned. The pacers have proven to be expensive at the death in all the five games they have played since the Asia Cup and going into the T20 World Cup, it remains a concern for India.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Indian pacers continued to leak runs at the death
  • The likes of Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh haven't been effective enough as South Africa scored 76 runs in the last five overs
  • Skipper Rohit Sharma admitted that the team needs to get its act together in that department with T20 World Cup fast approaching
Team India have won both the T20I series in the build-up to the T20 World Cup in Australia, mainly due to some exceptional batting, first against Australia and now against South Africa. However, one thing common in all the five games apart from batters' good form has been equally below-par performance by the bowlers, especially in the death overs.
The likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel were rendered ineffective on good batting surfaces during Australian series and even though Arshdeep Singh did well in the Asia Cup at the death and in the powerplay in the series opener against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram, he has been taken to the cleaners in the last few overs. Similarly, Harshal has blown hot and cold since his return from injury and in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, this is an area in which the Men in Blue could be found out if the speedster indeed misses the World Cup.
Skipper Rohit Sharma admitted that the death bowling is an area where they need to get their act together. Rohit still not labelled it as a concern as death overs are always challenging for the bowlers, they as batters too inflict the same pain on other teams but hoped that the team can improve in the coming games.
"The team wants to play and bowl in a certain way and we want to give them that freedom. Yes, we have not really bowled well in the death in the last five or six games. But that is the area where people will challenge us and we are doing the same to the opposition as well.
"To bowl and bat at the death is very tough. That is where the game is decided. I wouldn't say it's concerning, but it's definitely an area we need to pick ourselves up and get our act together," skipper said at the post-match presentation.
Indian bowlers leaked 76 runs in the last five overs on Sunday in the second T20I during a run-fest at Guwahati. Arshdeep, who was India's most successful bowler, was also the most expensive one as he gave away 62 runs in his four overs including 26 in the 19th.
