Reacting to the power shift in Bihar, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram took a dig at the BJP saying 'the party never betrays people of any state.' Drawing comparisons between the change in power dynamics in Maharashtra earlier this earlier, to that of Bihar, the Congress leader slammed the Saffron party saying that 'encouraging defections from other parties is a welfare measure for the upliftment of defectors' for the BJP. "BJP never betrays the people of any state. Encouraging defections from other parties is a welfare measure for the upliftment of defectors. To disband other political parties is to purge those parties. To destabilize the state governments is to bring stability in governance in those states," P Chidambaram wrote in a tweet.
Notably, yesterday Bihar Chief Nitish Kumar broke away from the BJP-led NDA alliance and joined hands with the Mahagathbandhan amid rumours of a rift between JD(U) and the Saffron party. Congress, RJD and Left parties pledged support to the JD(U) in the formation of the new government in Bihar. JD(U)-RJD-led 'Mahagathbandhan' (Grand Alliance) government in Bihar is set to take oath at 4 pm today.
Nitish Kumar noted that the decision to snap ties with the NDA was taken by his party, the JD(U). "All MPs and MLAs are at a consensus that we should leave the NDA," he said after stepping down from the CM post. The decision came after Kumar held a crucial meeting with party legislators and MPs at his official residence, in which he is understood to have said that he had been driven against the wall by the BJP which tried to weaken his party.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also reacted to upheaval in Bihar by drawing parallels with what happened in Maharashtra and said 'it was bound to happen.' "It was bound to happen, they made an alliance to come to power and it eventually broke. They (BJP) had dictatorial behaviour be it in Goa, MP, or Maharashtra," said Ashok Gehlot.
