Chennai: City police have put in place a five-tier security ring ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Chennai starting July 28. PM Modi will arrive in the city on Thursday to inaugurate the 44th International Chess Olympiad. He will also attend the Anna University convocation on July 29.
The Commissioner of Police, Shankar Jiwal, reviewed the security arrangements.
A press release from the city police said that 22,000 police personnel will be deployed, including senior officials, as a part of the five-tier security ring.
In view of security, the city police further banned air activity like the flying of objects such as microlight aircraft, hot air balloons, gas-filled balloons, small-sized powered aircraft, and para-jumping, on July 28 and 29, ahead of PM's visit. The use of these aerial platforms is prohibited under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
Moreover, a strict monitoring of various places that the PM will be visiting is already in progress. Lodges and hotels were checked to monitor the possible movement of suspicious persons and the venues for the two events that the PM has to attend were also under surveillance.
The Opening ceremony of the 44th Chess Olympiad will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on July 28, and the second event, which is a convocation ceremony, is at Anna University on July 29.
As many as 187 countries will be participating in the 44th Chess Olympiad which is being hosted in India for the first time.
