The 2022 Commonwealth Games enter Day 8 and some of the biggest names in Indian badminton will be in action, looking to prolong their stay in the individuals' event. After failing to defend their gold medal in the mixed team final against Malaysia, the Indian shuttlers are keen to go as far as they can in the individual events.
The likes of PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen, and Aakarshi Kashyap were all in action in their respective round of 32 matches on Thursday. All of them managed to get the better of their respective opponents and confirm spots in pre-quarters.
The two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu utterly dominated Maldives’ Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq 21-4, 21-11 in the women’s singles first round. Srikanth, on the other hand, simply outclassed Daniel Wanagaliya of Uganda 21-9, 21-9 in the men’s singles event.
It wasn't all win-win for India on Thursday as the Mixed Doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sumeeth Reddy crashed out in the first round itself.
A little later in the day, Kashyap and Sen also joined Sindhu and Srikanth into the women's and men's singles round of 16 respectively. Sen, who is a world championship bronze medallist, toyed with an opponent more than twice his age to secure a 21-1, 21-6 victory.
Kashyap, on the other hand, had to work hard in order to beat Pakistan's Mahoor Shahzad after the latter retired due to an injury.
