The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have confirmed that star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will miss the 2022 T20 World Cup. Bumrah was earlier ruled out of the ongoing series against South Africa due to a back injury and will not be fit in time for the marquee event in Australia. The Indian cricket governing body has stated that a replacement will be announced soon.
"The BCCI Medical team has ruled out Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. The decision was taken following a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists," said an official statement issued by the board.
Bumrah suffered the injury on the eve of the series opener against South Africa which skipper Rohit Sharma described as a 'niggle' at the toss. However, it was revealed later that Bumrah will miss the entire series and travel to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further checks.
The star Indian pacer had missed the 2022 Asia Cup due to a back problem too and only made his comeback in the recently concluded home series against Australia. Bumrah returned to playing XI for the second game after not being picked for the series opener.
Bumrah has a history of back issues having missed almost four months of action in the 2019 after suffering a stress fracture in his lower back.
Attention will now turn towards who will take Bumrah's place in the team. Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar are the two likely contenders as they are part of the standby players. However, Shami missed out on playing both the Australia and South Africa series due to COVID-19. Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Siraj are part of the squad currently having replaced Shami and Bumrah.
India will open their campaign in the mega event on October 23 against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
