The popularity of Indian cricketers knows no bounds and they are followed by cameras and fans wherever they go. That isn't the case in New Zealand and Ross Taylor got the first-hand experience of a life of an Indian cricketer during IPL 2011.
After spending the first three seasons at Royal Challengers Bangalore, Taylor joined Rajasthan Royals (RR) for one season. He got to play with India legend Rahul Dravid during his stay there. Dravid is one of the most popular personalities in India even a decade after retiring from international cricket. Back in 2011, he was an active player and his performance was closely followed.
Writing in his book Ross Taylor: Black & White, the former NZ captain has revealed that his coffee outing with Dravid went wrong as the fans surrounded them in a mall. As per the former cricketer, the security had to extract them and after that, he always had a coffee with Dravid in the hotel only.
"The South African off-spinner Johan Botha and I were sitting next to Rahul Dravid at breakfast in Jaipur. We asked him if he wanted to go for a coffee; he didn’t really, but we twisted his arm. We got a cab to a five-storeyed mall. We hadn’t taken any security with us, which was naive. Within two minutes the mall was packed – there were at least 4000 people – and we had to get mall security to extract us,” Taylor has written.
“I’m sure Rahul saw it coming, but he was too polite to turn us down. “Botes” and I were profusely apologetic on the way back to the hotel. Rahul played it down with his usual class, saying we probably would’ve been okay in a bigger city like Mumbai but, in the smaller cities, they didn’t see big-name cricketers that often. Jaipur’s population is around four million. After that, coffee with Dravid was always in the hotel."
Taylor was released by RR after IPL 2011 and he went on to play for other franchises till 2014. Dravid had a long association with RR and he played for them till the Champions League 2013. He joined RR's coaching staff for the next 2 years.
