Sonu Sood has weighed in on the argument about Hindi's status as the national language, following a Twitter spat between Ajay Devgn and Kiccha Sudeep. In a recent interview, Sonu Sood stated that Hindi cannot simply be referred to as the national language. The controversy started when Sudeep mentioned recently that “Hindi is no longer the national language,” a statement which Ajay apparently got offended with. After that, Ajay took to Twitter to question Sudeep on why he dubs his films in Hindi.
Sudeep then emphasised that his remark was misinterpreted and that he did not mean to offend anyone with his words. In a subsequent Twitter interaction, he and Ajay appeared to bury the hatchet, with Ajay referring to the Kannada actor as a 'friend'. Sudeep made the remark recently when discussing the success of films such as KGF: Chapter 2, RRR, and Pushpa: The Rise in the south.
Sonu has been in a number of South Indian films over the years. In an interview with IndianExpress.com, he said, “I don’t think Hindi can be called just the national language. India has one language, which is entertainment. It doesn’t really matter which industry you belong to. If you entertain people, they will love you, honour you and accept you.”
The actor went on to say that the success of South films will "change the way Hindi films will be made," and that filmmakers must now heed the tastes of the audience. “Gone are days when people used to say ‘leave your mind behind’. They won’t leave their mind behind and shell out thousands of rupees on an average film. Only good cinema will be accepted,” he added.
Sonu has the Telugu film Acharya, which stars Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan as father and son, in the pipeline. He also has Thamilarasan, a Tamil film, set to be released this year. After that, he'll be seen in the Akshay Kumar-starrer Prithviraj, a historical epic. Former Miss World Manushi Chhillar makes her acting debut in the film, which also stars Sanjay Dutt.
