WATCH: Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem record 90.18m throw in the men's javelin throw final of 2022 Commonwealth Games

Pakistani javelin throw athlete Arshad Nadeem created history on Sunday as he became the first player to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal by registering a throw of more than 90 meters. In his fifth attempt, the 25-year-old registered a throw of 90.18 m to set up a new CWG record and bag the yellow metal in the absence of 2018 CWG winner Neeraj Chopra.

Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist and defending Commonwealth Games champion, missed this year’s multi-sporting event due to fitness issues, and in his absence, his longtime rival and friend from Pakistan, Arshad Nadeem, won the gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a games record of 90.18 m.

The World Championship gold medallist, Anderson Peters of Grenada, was also in the fray, but it was the 25-year-old Nadeem who surprised everyone by taking the yellow metal. The Pakistani athlete set a new personal best of 90.18m to beat reigning world champion Anderson Peters, who only had to settle for silver with an 88.64m throw. It was a disappointing result for Peters, who won the World Championship gold in Eugene last month by registering three throws of more than 90 meters.

With his record-breaking performance on Sunday (August 7), Nadeem became only the second Asian athlete after Chao-Tsun Chen of Taiwan to breach the 90m mark in men's javelin throw. Even Chopra hasn’t breached the 90 m mark yet. Arshad's throw of 90.18 was also the new Commonwealth Games record.

Nadeem bettered his personal best thrice over the course of the final. His personal best before this was 86.38m. He threw 86.81m on his first attempt, 88m on his third attempt, and then broke the ceiling with his 90m+ throw on the fifth attempt to win the gold among the elite field. With his superb performance on Sunday, Arshad also became the first Pakistani track and field athlete to win a gold medal for his country in 60 years.

Till now, only 22 players have been able to successfully breach the 90 m mark in men’s javelin throw history, and with his sensational display on Sunday, Nadeem has entered his name into the record books forever.

Sunday (August 7) was the first anniversary of Neeraj Chopra’s historic achievement in Tokyo. On August 7, 2021, Neeraj became India's first track-and-field Olympic gold medallist. He gave his best throw of 87.58m in his second attempt to clinch the gold medal.
