Dumka (Jharkhand): The 22-year-old woman who was set ablaze by a man for rejecting his marriage proposal succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ranchi on Friday.
The woman identified as Maruti Kumari, a resident of Bhalki village in the Jarmundi area under the Dumka district of Jharkhand, was initially rushed to a local hospital by her family members. She was later referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi after her health condition deteriorated.
Maruti, who had sustained almost 80 percent burn injuries, died while being shifted to RIMS, a senior police officer said as reported by The Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren condoled the demise of the woman and announced a compensation of Rs 10 Lakhs for the bereaved family.
“Deeply saddened by the sad news of the demise of daughter Maruti from Jarmundi, Dumka. The accused is in the custody of the police. Prayers for the peace of the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear the difficult time of grief. Instructions have been given to provide an assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased daughter,” wrote the CM on his Twitter handle.
Shivender Thakur, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Jarmundi told PTI that the accused Rajesh Raut has been arrested and the initial probe revealed that he was already married.
Following the death of the woman, Dumka superintendent of police, Amber Lakra, informed a team of doctors in presence of a magistrate will conduct the autopsy of the victim, reported HT.
Lakra further said that the woman's statement was recorded in presence of a magistrate before her death which will be considered her dying declaration. A separate FIR has also been registered in connection with the case.
Maruti in her statement said that the accused had earlier threatened to kill her in the manner in which the 19-year-old Dumka girl was set ablaze in August this year.
SDPO Shivender Thakur said: "On Friday morning, the accused who wanted to marry the victim broke into her house, poured petrol on her while she was sleeping, and set her ablaze."
"The family members rushed to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital, and doctors later referred her to RIMS,” a senior officer was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. The victim and the accused were known to each other since 2019.
