  • Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly wants to leave Manchester United for a new club.
  • The Red Devils, however, are doing their bit to keep Ronaldo at the club for one more year.
  • Amid this saga, Wayne Rooney feels United should let Ronaldo go.
Cristiano Ronaldo's reported willingness to leave Manchester United for a club that plays in the Champions League has resulted in plenty of chatter on social media. While the club intends to keep hold of the superstar player, Wayne Rooney wants the Portuguese goalscorer to be released.
Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes has been on the hunt for a new club since the start of the transfer window. Having received a 'No' from clubs like Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, etc., Mendes is struggling to find a new home for Ronaldo.
Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, and a few other top bosses at the club have reportedly tried to speak to Ronaldo hoping to make him stay but the forward's first preference, even today, is said to be a move away.
Amid all this drama over Ronaldo's future, Rooney has asked the club bosses to let the 37-year-old go. "I think United should let Cristiano Ronaldo go,” the former Manchester United striker told The Times.
Rooney doesn't feel United are in a position to challenge for titles at present, and hence, they should get a striker who will stay at the club for next 3-4 seasons. With Ronaldo, unfortunately, that isn't the case.
"It's not that Ronaldo can't play in a Ten Hag team. He can play in any team. Ronny will always score you goals. But my personal view is that United aren't ready to challenge for the title now, so the aim has to be to build a team that can win the league in the next three to four years, and you have to plan for that.
"If the reports are true that Cristiano wants to leave the club, then United should allow him to go and get a No 9 in who is going to be there for the next three or four years and really help them build a team that can be successful. Ten Hag has to be given time to do it,” he said.
Ronaldo appeared for United from the bench in the club's Premier League opener against Brighton. However, it was a lacklustre performance from the home team as Brighton produced a stunning upset, beating the Red Devils 1-2.
