On Saturday, June 25, people had to wait around three hours to enter the Nagasandra store while long traffic jams were also seen in the city as motorists drove to the store in large numbers.
Seeing the rush, the Swedish furniture conglomerate, which has opened its first store in Bengaluru at Nagasandra, informed the store visitors about the waiting time in a tweet on Saturday. It tweeted, "Bengaluru, we are overwhelmed by your response. The current wait time at Nagasandra store is 3 hours. Please plan accordingly or shop online. For latest wait time updates." (sic)
Moreover, the Nagasandra Metro station is also said to have recorded a higher than usual footfall on Saturday as people headed to the IKEA store. This was the first weekend since the store opened up in Bengaluru on June 22.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had inaugurated IKEA's largest store in India and said that the company has decided to make an investment of about Rs 3,000 crore in the state. This is IKEA’s third flagship store in the country, the other two are in Hyderabad and Mumbai.
The store in Bengaluru is spread over a span of 4,60,000 square feet and offers a wide range of home furnishing products. The facility is also home to a 1,000-seater restaurant that offers Indian and Swedish delicacies.
IKEA has employed 1,000 co-workers with 72 per cent local co-workers. It further plans to hire more people from the local neighbourhood.
