Mumbai: BJP to organise Marathi Dandiya Mahotsav ahead of civic poll

BJP and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena have been competing for Marathi votes ahead of BMC polls. Dandiya festival is predominantly celebrated by the Gujarati community in Mumbai. However, this attempt can be seen to woo the politically significant Marathis by holding a grand Dandiya festival for them.

Mumbai:Ahead of the crucial BMC elections, there is a fight between BJP and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena to win over the vital Marathi votes from Mumbai. With an eye on Marathi vote bank, the BJP has now announced Marathi Dandiya Mahotsav in the city of Mumbai.
Slated to be one of the biggest Navratri festivals in Mumbai, the Dandiya Mahotsav is organized at Shaheed Bhagatsingh Maidan in Abhudaya Nagar, Sewri. The program will be held from September 30 to October 4 and famous Marathi singer Avadhoot Gupte will be performing at it.
Apart from Gupte, famous Marathi and Hindi singer Vaishali Samant and other few celebrities are also roped in for this program. BJP had selected three locations like the politically significant Jamboree Maidan in Worli area which is the constituency of Aditya Thackeray, Mahalakshmi Race Course and Abhyudaya Nagar for this event. However, in the end, they accepted the option of Abhyudaya Nagar.
"The previous Maha Vikas Aghadi Government had put in several restrictions on Hindu festivals in the name of Covid. However, our government has lifted all these restrictions and it was evident during Dahi Handi and Ganpati festivals. Similarly, we will be celebrating Navratri on a grand scale. We will also be requesting CM Shinde to extend the deadline for Navratri until 12am (midnight) for the last two days," BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha said in the press conference.
BJP state vice president Chitra Wagh said, "Everyone wants a big Dandiya event in Mumbai. This Dandiya event with Avadhoot Gupte has been organised to fulfill the desire of Mumbaikars. We expect a good response for it."
Singer Avadhoot Gupte said that he is happy that Marathi Dandiya Mahotsav has been organised in Mumbai and it will be an opportunity for him to connect with his fans during a vibrant religious event like Navratri.
In another attempt to woo Marathi voters, BJP recently had organised free buses for Mumbaikars who were traveling to Konkan for Ganpati festival.
