A 50-km ride home for a Mumbai man turned out to be quite an expensive affair when Uber charged him Rs. 3,000 from Prabhadevi to Dombivli.
Nothing comes close to literalising the English proverb “When it rains, it pours” than a rainy day in Mumbai. The infamous heavy rains combine with the infrastructural monstrosity that the coastal city is to make life the wettest hell throughout monsoon - and to a degree that you may even see a Swiggy delivery boy taking a horse through the streets of Dadar to drop off orders.
But a seemingly-first world problem descended on a Mumbai man when he tried to book an Uber home.
Sharing a screenshot of the fares displayed for a 50-kilometre ride, Shravankumar Suvarna wrote on Twitter, “Flight to Goa is cheaper than my ride home", adding the phrase “Peak Mumbai rains” as a hashtag.
It appears that Suvarna was trying to rideshare his way from Prabhadevi in Mumbai to an area close to Dombivli of Thane district right next door.
However, for an UberGo that was 8 minutes away, Uber would charge him Rs. 3,041 (and 54 paise) for the journey. Upgrading from a hatchback to a sedan (Premier) was a steep Rs. 4,081 and an Uber XL would have cost the rider over Rs. 5,150.
“Fares are a lot higher due to increased demand,” the dreaded surge-pricing warning read in the screenshot.
The tweet went viral with many sharing similar experiences.
“With UBERXL rate you can get a decent 1bhk on outer of Nashik,” wrote one user, putting the cost into perspective, however incomprehensible by someone raised in Mumbai.
To this, Suvarna replied, “Hahaha! Shifting to Nashik for better quality of life”
