Shardiya Navratri, the nine-night and ten-day-long festival, dedicated to Goddess Durga and the feminine power, commences today. This festival falls during the onset of autumn or Sharad in the Hindu month of Ashwin, Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon), and hence the name Shardiya Navratri. Interestingly, during these nine days, devotees observe a day-long fast and worship the nine forms of Maa Durga, collectively hailed as Navdurga.
And on day 1 of Navratri, devotees pay tributes to Maa Shailputri. Hence, read on to know the Shailputri Puja Vidhi, Shubh Muhurat, Mantra, Bhog and Aarti lyrics.
Devi Shailputri
Devi Sati, the daughter of King Daksha, was reborn as Shailputri (meaning: the daughter of the Himalayas). She is endowed with a Trishul (Trident) in the right hand and a pink lotus in the left. She is also hailed as Vrisha Roodha because she is mounted on a bull (Vrishabha).
Shailputri Puja Shubh Muhurat
Abhijeet Muhurat -11:48 AM to 12:36 PM
Vijay Muhurat - 2:13 PM to 3:01 PM
Godhuli Muhurat - 6:01 PM to 6:25 PM
Shailputri Puja Vidhi
Worship Lord Ganesha (Vighnaharta) and seek his blessings for a trouble-free Navratri vrat.
Light a lamp (with desi cow ghee or mustard or sesame oil) and place it on the altar to the right of the Goddess' idol/image.
Invoke Maa Shailputri by chanting the following Mantras.
Shailputri Mantras
ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमः॥
Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah॥
वन्दे वाञ्छितलाभाय चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम्।
वृषारूढां शूलधरां शैलपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम्॥
Vande Vanchhitalabhaya Chandrardhakritashekharam।
Vrisharudham Shuladharam Shailaputrim Yashasvinim॥
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु माँ शैलपुत्री रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥
Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Shailaputri Rupena Samsthita।
Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah॥
Perform the Panchopchara puja by offering Gandham, Pushpam, Deepam, Sugandham and Naivedyam (bhog).
Shailputri Bhog
Kheer (pudding) made with Cow's milk.
Fruits, coconut with its husk, bananas, paan and supari, Haldi and kumkum.
Conclude the puja by singing the Aarti and offer your salutations by lighting the camphor.
Distribute prasad after completing the puja.
