Kolkata:West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Thursday claimed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders are involved in scams. The allegation comes at a time when the West Bengal government is facing a series of allegations of corruption involving its ministers - most recently the teacher recruitment scam in which ex-minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested.
Addressing a press conference, the Congress leader alleged that the TMC supremo and other party leaders have been misusing the government for many years.
He further alleged the involvement of police in these scams.
“CM Mamata Banerjee and TMC leaders are involved in scams. For many years they have been misusing the government. Such scams are not possible without the support of the government and the police,” Chowdhury told reporters.
He also called TMC a “party of thieves.”
The Opposition is attacking the Banerjee-led government over the corruption allegations involving its ministers and leaders.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier arrested the former Commerce and Industries Minister of West Bengal Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee in the school jobs scam after the recovery of huge amounts of cash and other valuables at properties linked to them.
Senior TMC leader Anubrata Mondal was also arrested on Thursday by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from his residence in Bengal’s Bolpur in connection with a cattle smuggling case.
The arrest came after Mondal skipped his scheduled appearance before the central probe agency twice in three days.
Notably, the CBI served a notice to Mondal under Section 41 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) before arresting him for allegedly not cooperating in its probe into the scam.
Soon after Mondal’s arrest, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari praised the probe agency and called him a ‘Mafia created by Mamata Banerjee’.
Meanwhile, the TMC has planned a state-wide protest against the "partial faces of ED and CBI".
"We only have trust in the judiciary now. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, the TMC youth and student wings will protest against the partial faces of ED and CBI in every district," the TMC leader and West Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya told reporters on Thursday.
