New Delhi: Senior advocate R Venkataramani was on Wednesday appointed as the new Attorney General of India for a period of three years. He will succeed KK Venugopal after the latter's term ends on September 30. Earlier this week senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi had turned down the central government's offer of a second term as AG.
Rohatgi had previously held the top post from June 2014 to June 2017. He was succeeded by Venugopal, who had voiced his unwillingness to continue in the post due to "personal reasons" earlier this year. Towards the end of June the AG had acceded to a request from the government and was subsequently re-appointed as the top law officer of the country for three months - till September 30.
Venkataramani had previously served as a member of Law Commission of India in 2010. He has been appearing for the State of Tamil Nadu as a Special Senior Counsel for the past 12 years and has been a Special Senior Counsel for the State of Andhra Pradesh.
