New Delhi: Holding an all-party meeting in Rajasthan after the ghastly killing of a tailor in Udaipur has strengthened democratic traditions in times of crisis, said Congress.
In a veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said this is in sharp contrast to the way he functions.
“By holding an all-party meeting and genuinely hearing suggestions from everyone, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has shown the way how to build confidence and promote peace. Congress strengthens democratic traditions and norms, especially in times of crisis. What a contrast to the Vishguru,” the former Union minister tweeted.
Leaders of all political parties in Rajasthan strongly condemned the Udaipur incident and appealed for peace and restraint.
The parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), unanimously said such acts have no place in a civilised society and demanded strict punishment for those involved in it.
Earlier on Wednesday, BJP leader Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore slammed the Rajasthan government saying it is responsible for the “terror attack” and such incidents are being reported from the state.
Terror organizations are thriving in the state and the state government has directly or indirectly provoked them, Rathore said at a press conference.
The incident took place in Udaipur’s Maldas area and after committing the crime, the two accused identified as Riyaz Akhtar and Ghos Mohammad posted a video on social media boasting about the beheading and threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s life as well.
The accused were arrested within hours of the incident.
Riyaz Akhtar attacked Kanhaiya Lal with a sharp-edged weapon while Ghos Mohammad recorded the crime on his mobile phone.
Meanwhile, investigators probing the murder of a Udaipur tailor are looking into the possible link of the two men involved in the attack with an Islamist outfit in Pakistan.
Following the murder, local markets in the area were shut as the traders demanded justice for the victim.
