Odisha: Mob barges into police station, thrashes cops for arresting man on charges of smuggling 'ganja'

Odisha News: The villagers alleged that the police forcefully arrested a villager in the ganja smuggling case. Enraged over the alleged police excess on tribals, the local people barged at the police station and thrashed the cops inside.

Paralakhemundi (Odisha): A mob of around 200 people barged into a police station in the Gajapati district of Odisha on Tuesday morning and thrashed the cops present inside protesting the arrest of a man on charges of smuggling ganja (marijuana).
According to the police, people from 6 gram panchayats forcefully entered the Adava police station in the Mohana block of the district and attacked the officers present inside. They also ransacked the police station, the police said as reported by IANS.
The villagers alleged that the police forcefully arrested a villager in the ganja smuggling case. Enraged over the alleged police excess on tribals, the local people gathered at the police station and sat on a demonstration demanding the release of the man. Later, they stormed into the police station and attacked the cops alleging that it was a fake case.
An agitator, Danial Bhuiyan alleged that policemen entered Jharanapur village without a search warrant and picked up a man on Monday night, reported IANS.
“Until the police release the man, the agitation will continue,” Bhuiyan added.
Sebati Gamango, sarpanch of Chudangapadar told IANS, "The cops forcefully enter the villages and torture tribals. The man has been arrested in a false case. I strongly protest the police atrocity against tribals. He should be released immediately.”
Later, a team from nearby R Udaygiri and Mohana police stations arrived at the spot as reinforcement. SDPO RK Pati also rushed to the spot. However, the villagers continued the dharna in front of the police station to press their demands.
The damage caused by the mob attack was yet to be ascertained, at least eight cops sustained injuries while records, files furniture, and a police vehicle were reportedly damaged by the angry villagers.
Gajapati SP Jayram Satpathy said the police had requested the villagers not to indulge in illegal ganja plantation and its trade. "We will take further action in the coming days," he added as reported by IANS.
