Accuracy and other skills should never come at cost of pace: Sanjay Manjrekar on Umran Malik

Umran Malik made his international debut on the tour of Ireland, picking up his first wicket in the 2nd T20I. Suggesting a method to correct his accuracy, Sanjay Majrekar has urged the pacer to practice bowling at a single stump. However, Manjrekar doesn't feel accuracy should come at the cost of pace.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Umran Malik played both T20Is on the tour of Ireland, picking up 1 wicket.
  • The express pacer's accuracy looked off at times, making him concede plenty of runs.
  • Sanjay Manjrekar has urged Umran to practice bowling at a single stump.
One of the most exciting talents in Indian cricket at present, Umram Malik made a highly-anticipated debut on the tour of Ireland. He was a part of the playing XI in both the T20Is, picking up his maiden wicket in the second match. While Umran did manage to impress people with his pace, his accuracy was in the series was a little wayward.
There are some who believe that the pacer from Jammu & Kashmir should add more accuracy and other skills to his bowling, even if he ends up losing a bit of pace. However, Sanjay Manjrekar isn't of this opinion at all.
Having analysed Umran's performances, Manjrekar advised him to practice bowling at a single stump in order to bring more accuracy to his bowling. However, the former India cricketer-turned-pundit cautioned him against losing his pace in the process.
"What a rare talent Umran Mallik is! All he needs to do in practice is bowl a million balls aimed at one stump," Manjrekar tweeted. "Accuracy & other skills will come in time. But NEVER should it come at the cost of pace," he added.
While there's no denying that Umran still looks a few steps behind becoming a regular for the Indian cricket team on the international circuit, he had a brilliant Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 campaign for Sunrisers Hyderabad this year. He emerged as the highest wicket-taker among Indian pacers with a total of 22 scalps to his name.
It was his IPL performances that saw the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors give him the nod for the tour of Ireland.
It isn't often that one comes across a player who can consistently bowl in excess of 150 kph. Umran is certainly raw, having only gotten a full IPL season under his belt this year. However, if nourished in the right manner, the pacer has the potential to do magical things for India in the future.
