Former Pakistani men’s cricket team captain and star all-rounder Shoaib Malik, who is still an active cricketer, took a jibe at his exclusion from the team for the 2022 Asia Cup T20 tournament by posting a cryptic tweet after Men in Green suffered a 23-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the final of the continental event on Sunday (September 11) in Dubai.
The 40-year-old last represented Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last year and played a key role in the team’s run to the semifinals by providing stability in the middle order. He was dropped from the team after the T20 World Cup despite justifying his selection with his performance, and his exclusion from the Asia Cup squad also raised quite a few questions.
Malik, who has represented Pakistan in 124 T20Is, has been in good form in the National T20 Cup, wherein he recently scored a half-century for Central Punjab. Apart from that, he had been consistently performing in the middle-overs for Pakistan and other teams he had been playing in T20 leagues across the globe.
After Pakistan were embarrassed by Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup T20 tournament on Sunday in Dubai, Malik posted a tweet in which he wrote, "When will we come out from friendship, liking & disliking culture? Allah always helps the honest."
His tweet caught the attention of many fans and former greats and immediately went viral. One of his former teammate Kamran Akmal took note of it and responded to the tweet, saying: "Ustad G don’t be this much honest."
Quite a few fans also responded to Malik's post, saying Pakistan lacked experience in the middle-order and depended heavily on the opening pair of Rizwan and Babar Azam.
Babar and Rizwan arrived at the tournament as the top-two batters in the ICC T20 rankings, but had totally different seasons. On one hand, Rizwan finished as the leading run getter by scoring 281 runs from 6 matches, whereas on the other hand, Babar was only able to make 68 runs from as many games.
