Tehran: France on Friday urged Iran to take "advantage" of a visit by European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to conclude the 2015 nuclear deal, reported Reuters. Borell is on a two-day visit to Iran. He reached Tehran on Friday.
"We are ready to reach a conclusion on this deal and we urge Iran to take advantage of this diplomatic opportunity to conclude it now, while it still remains possible," the French foreign affairs ministry said in a statement. The EU diplomat will try to convince Iran to revive the nuclear deal.
Earlier this month, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also urged Iran to resume talks to revive the 2015 nuclear accord. Notably, Iran disconnected some cameras that were installed to monitor its nuclear activities by international inspectors in retaliation to the resolution tabled by the United States and European countries to urge Iran to cooperate with the IAEA.
The United States also blamed Iran's Iran's demands on sanctions-lifting for the failure in reviving the deal. Iran reportedly wanted that the US should remove its elite Revolutionary Guards from its Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO] list.
The deal is also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). It is an agreement between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States - the European Union and Germany. It was signed in 2015 in Vienna. However, in 2018, the United States pulled out of the deal as then US President Donald Trump had said that he would negotiate a better deal.
