From 2018-20, 4,690 people arrested, 149 convicted under UAPA: Govt

New Delhi: Nityanand Rai, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, said on Wednesday that 4,690 people were arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act between 2018 and 2020 and 149 were convicted.
In 2020, 1,321 people were arrested under the anti-terror law while 80 people were convicted, said the Ujiarpur MP.
While responding to a written question in Rajya Sabha, Rai said that in 2019, there were 1,948 arrests under the UAPA and 34 convictions and in 2018, there were 1,421 arrests and 35 convictions.
According to the minister, Uttar Pradesh (1,338) had the highest number of arrests under the UAPA between 2018 and 2020, followed by Manipur (943) and Jammu and Kashmir (750).
He added that 2,488 of those arrested were in the 18-30 age group and 1,850 were in the 30-45 age group.
Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai also told the Rajya Sabha that the armed forces' selection process does not discriminate based on caste.
Responding to the question of Yuvajana, Shramika, Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) MP V Vijay Sai Reddy, Rai said recruitment to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles is not based on caste.
It should be noted, however, that reservation is granted to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) categories as per the existing policies of the government, said Rai.
"Vacancies reserved for SC category are filled up from the candidates belonging to SC category only," said Rai.
