Nearly 68 lakh income tax returns were filed till 11 pm on the last day of filing ITR for 2021-22 fiscal by salaried individuals, the I-T department said on Sunday. The deadline for filing I-T returns, by those taxpayers who do not have to get their accounts audited for the fiscal ended on March 31, 2022, is Sunday.
Till July 30, more than 5.10 crore tax returns had been filed.
Giving statistics of Income Tax Returns (ITR) filed on Sunday, the I-T department tweeted: "53,98,348 #ITRs have been filed up to 2000 hours today & 4,95,505 #ITRs filed in the last 1hr."
Last fiscal (2020-21), about 5.89 crore ITRs were filed by the extended due date of December 31, 2021.
“Statistics of Income Tax Returns filed today. 67,97,067 #ITRs have been filed upto 2300 hours today & 4,50,013 #ITRs filed in the last 1hr. For any assistance, pl connect on orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in or on our help desk nos 1800 103 0025 & 1800 419 0025.” the I-T department tweeted after 6 pm on Sunday.
The last-minute rush could be explained by several taxpayers waiting for an extension of the deadline, which did not happen this time.
The I-T department has repeatedly reminded taxpayers by way of emails and SMS reminders to file ITR on time.
Some experts earlier suggested that the government is only likely to extend the last date for ITR filing only if many taxpayers face technical problems on the Income Tax portal.
Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj has been widely quoted by the media as saying that the government has no plans to extend the deadline.
It is to be noted that the Sunday deadline is applicable for those taxpayers who do not need to get their accounts audited. Also, today is the last day to file ITR without paying any late fees or penalties. However, taxpayers may file a belated ITR after July 31 till December 31 by paying a late fee up to Rs 5,000. Those who miss the December 31 deadline may even face jail term according to the provisions of the I-T laws.
