Kolkata: A 33-year-old woman doctor, reportedly suffering from depression, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her flat at a posh south Kolkata complex in the early hours of Sunday.
The doctor has been identified as Debika Chatterjee. She was a divorcee and associated with a private hospital in Alipore, said police as reported by TOI.
Debika’s parents told the police that she was suffering from depression for the last few months. Cops have found a suicide note, blaming no one for the extreme step.
Debika lived in a flat at Diamond City South Complex in Tollygunge with her parents. Her neighbours told police that she had moved in to live with her parents after the divorce.
“The flat belonged to her parents. She started living with them after her divorce. It is difficult to believe that she could end her life like this," said a neighbour.
On Sunday at around 2.45 am, Haridevpur police station received a call about the woman’s death following which a police team immediately reached the flat. They found Debika lying unconscious on the bed in her room and rushed her to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where she was declared brought dead, reported TOI.
Police said, as per the parents of the deceased, Debika’s mother Madhabi found her room locked from inside at around 2 am and called her. However, she did not respond despite being called multiple times.
"Madhabi along with her husband Debasish then broke open the door and entered the room to find their daughter hanging from the ceiling fan with a bed sheet. They opened the knot and brought her down but upon finding no pulse, they called the police," said an officer of Kolkata Police as quoted by TOI.
Police said they recovered a note from Debika’s bedroom in which she blamed none for her death. Police further said that they could not detect any foul play in this regard and no complaint has been received from any corner yet.
However, police registered an unnatural death case and sent the body for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of the death. They are also examining the note for the woman’s handwriting, reported TOI.
Debika’s family, as she mentioned in her social media bio, hailed from Jamshedpur where she did her schooling before studying medicine at Burdwan Medical College. She used to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology.
