Delhi: With light rain likely in the city from Tuesday night, Delhi's currently 'moderate' air quality is expected to improve. The intensity of the rainfall, which is expected to settle down pollutants in the air, will increase from light to moderate on October 7.
Delhi's air quality remains in the upper end of the 'moderate' category with an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 181 on Sunday.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, there is a possibility of very light rain or drizzles at one or two places on night of October 4. However, light rain or thundershowers are likely to be seen on Wednesday and Thursday.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rain showers at many places are expected on October 7 and 8.
"A low-pressure area is currently over the Bay of Bengal and it is moving towards northwest India. Easterly winds with moisture to come to Delhi, bringing rain from Tuesday night to October 8," said a Met department official.
According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, air quality will improve but remain in the moderate category on October 4 and 5.
"There is a possibility of very light rain on October 4 and light rain or thunderstorm on October 5. The air quality is likely to remain largely in the 'moderate' to 'satisfactory' category in the subsequent seven days," said the bulletin of the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi.
The measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) will not come into effect untill the forecast shows 'poor' air quality.
VK Soni, head of environment and research centre, IMD, and member of the sub-committee, which will implement measures under GRAP, said, that the air quality of Delhi is expected to remain in the upper end of the 'moderate' category on Monday.
"However, as rain is predicted to lash Delhi from Tuesday, the air quality is likely to improve as rain will settle down the pollutants," he added.
Soni also said that the GRAP measures would be reviewed when the air quality is forecast to deteriorate to the 'poor' category.
An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".
