Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Mumbai from 1 pm today till the next 24 hours requesting Mumbaikars to plan their travel and schedules accordingly. After days of incessant rain in Mumbai, the showers finally took a breather on Friday morning.
The IMD has previously issued a red alert for the city and its suburbs predicting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places during the day. The weather department also said that there is a possibility of occasional strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph.
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus services and Mumbai's lifeline, its local train services, carried out normal operations today as there was no waterlogging reported anywhere. However, some suburban trains are slightly behind schedule, an official said.
After heavy rains in the city and its neighbouring areas since Monday, the intensity of showers started subsiding on Thursday afternoon. In the 24-hour period ending 8 am on Friday, the island city (south Mumbai) received an average rainfall of 28.08 mm while its eastern suburbs and western suburbs recorded 32.64 mm, and 51.96 mm of rainfall respectively, a civic official said.
The IMD on Thursday issued a 'red alert' for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts predicting heavy rainfall in several areas and the likeliness of extremely heavy rains at isolated places. A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rains of more than 20 cm in 24 hours period.
