Pune: The MahaMetro has reduced the frequency of trains on both active routes due to a decline in footfall. On the Garware College to Vanaz route, the trains will now run at a speed of 30 minutes, while on the PCMC to Phugewadi route, the trains will run every hour until afternoon, with a gap of 35 minutes until evening.
Officials from MahaMetro told that the trains were running at a 30-minute halt after the service was launched. In April and May, the frequency was increased to 20 minutes on weekends, but it was reverted to 30 minutes.
“Since these are the first months of the Metro services, we have been changing the frequency based on customer feedback. The footfall was northbound shortly after the launch, which caused an increase in frequency.” said an official from MahaMetro.
On weekdays the trains run for 13 hours and are operational for 14 hours on the weekends, on the Vanaz route. On the PCMC route, the targets are scheduled to last 13 hours each day. About 5.36 lakh ridership was recorded in March, 2.23 lakh in April, and 1.88 lakh in May.
As opposed to the Garware College-Vanaz portion, the PCMC route has seen fewer people. As a result, train frequency on the PCMC route has been reduced even more.
Hemant Sonawane, the general manager (PR) at MahaMetro, said, “Over 9.66 lakh commuters have traveled in Metro trains so far on both the routes, which include the ridership of 6.84 lakh recorded on the Vanaz route and 2.81 lakh on PCMC stretch."
