Chandigarh: The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will on Tuesday hold a parallel 'Janta di Vidhan Sabha' (people's assembly) to discuss matters concerning the people of the state. According to Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma, the party would not allow the Aam Aadmi Party government to "misuse" the House.
The move is being perceived as a counter-offensive against the ruling AAP which had earlier accused the BJP of trying to overthrow the state government by offering money to its MLAs.
The BJP has not yet revealed the location of the 'Janta di Vidhan Sabha' (mock session), reported news agency PTI.
A one-day session of the Punjab Assembly will take place here on Tuesday where issues like stubble burning, Goods and Services Tax, and power supply will be discussed.
Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Sunday gave the go-ahead to convene the House on September 27 after days of conflict between the Raj Bhavan and the AAP government over holding the Assembly session.
The Governor had previously withdrawn permission to hold a special session on September 22 when the AAP government wanted to bring a confidence motion only.
Recently, the AAP had claimed that the BJP offered Rs 25 crore to at least 10 of its MLAs as part of its attempt to overthrow the six-month-old government under its 'Operation Lotus'.
The Punjab BJP chief told the media on Monday that he and party MLA Jangi Lal Mahajan will attend the Vidhan Sabha session, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, said PTI.
According to Sharma, the House should be used for discussing public matters, not spreading lies to settle political scores.
"We will not allow them (AAP) to misuse the House to please (AAP supremo) Arvind Kejriwal at any cost," said Sharma.
The party's core group has decided to hold 'Janta di Vidhan Sabha' on Tuesday, said Sharma.
"We will also hold a parallel 'Janta di Vidhan Sabha' in which leaders, including Amarinder Singh and Sunil Jakhar, will also be part of the same."
The Punjab BJP chief added that the 'people's assembly' will address issues affecting Punjab citizens, such as AAP's election promises, drugs, corruption, farmers' plight, and Dalit students.
There will not only be a Speaker of the 'Janta di Vidhan Sabha', but resolutions will also be brought, said the Punjab BJP chief.
Sharma accused the AAP government of diverting people's attention from the state's pressing problems.
"People want answers over the issue of law and order, farmers' plight and (AAP's) poll promises," said Sharma, alleging the ruling party does not intend to fulfil its election promises.
While taking on the Bhagwant Mann government for making false accusations of offering money to its legislators to topple the six-month-old government, the BJP leader alleged that the AAP government had been playing a drama and spreading lies for the last 15 days.
"They want to misuse the House to please their bosses - Arvind Kejriwal and Raghav Chadha in Delhi," claimed Sharma.
Furthermore, he criticised the AAP leaders for targeting the Governor after they requested details about the legislative agenda for September 27 session.
Moreover, Sharma stated that the party has written to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker to request that a resolution be introduced in the Assembly thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for naming Chandigarh airport after Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
