A couple in Kerala traded their lifelong dream of going on Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage undertaken by millions to Mecca, for the greater good, PTI reported.
Jasmine and Haneefa, of Aranmula, somewhat of a holy city in itself - had plans to sell their ancestral land to put together some savings for the Hajj but a life-changing epiphany hit them as the dream began to materialise.
The couple, who have been married for over 30 years now, decided to donate their 12,000 sq ft land to the LIFE Mission, the state government’s housing scheme for landless people.
Jasmine and her husband were moved by the misery of a neighbour family living in a rented house that found it hard to find a place to cremate one of their deceased loved ones.
"We were planning to sell our property and use the funds for haj pilgrimage,” Haneefa said. “But, in the past couple of months, we saw some incidents in which certain families find it difficult to cremate their family members as they don't own a property. Such incidents made us rethink our Haj plans," he explained.
The inspiration of the decision came from another altruistic deed of a community leader who had donated their four cents of land to a bereaved family so they could cremate the family member who had passed.
"People like Haneefa and Jasmine have set an example of humanity and are role models for society," Local Self-Government Minister MV Govindam told PTI, describing the couple’s generosity as an inspiration for society.
