44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai: Traffic to be affected on some stretches for torch rally, opening ceremony; see list of traffic arrangements

Traffic on some routes of Chennai will be affected today in view of a torch rally that will be taken out as part of the 44th Chess Olympiad from 4 pm-7 pm this evening. The Greater Chennai traffic police have also put in place traffic restrictions on some stretches in view of the opening ceremony which will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium tomorrow, July 28.

Chennai: The movement of traffic on some roads in Chennai is likely to be affected today in view of a torch rally that will be taken out as part of the 44th Chess Olympiad. The rally will start around 4 pm and end around 7 pm from Presidency College to Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium.
The Chess Olympiad is scheduled to commence in Mamallapuram from July 28 onwards.
As per a press release by the traffic police, 38 torches from all districts in Tamil Nadu will reach the Presidency College ground and will be taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium.
The torch rally will pass through the Kamarajar Salai, the Rajaji Salai, War Memorial, the Flag Staff Road, Anna Salai, the Pallavan Salai, Central Alight Point, PLC Junction and Raja Muthiah Salai before reaching Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.
The Greater Chennai Traffic Police have made elaborate arrangements to maintain the traffic flow on roads like the Kamarajar Salai, the Rajaji Salai, part of the Anna Salai, Pallavan Salai and the Raja Muthiah Salai.
Moreover, the opening ceremony of the 44th World Chess Championships will be held in Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium at Raja Muthiah Road in Periamet tomorrow, July 28.
The ceremony will be attended by dignitaries like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor of Tamil Nadu R. N. Ravi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, among several states as well as central ministers. Many popular chess players from across the world will also be present at the event.
Traffic arrangements for the opening ceremony on July 28:
-There will be heavy traffic congestion along Rajah Muthiah Road, EVR Periyar Road, Central Square, Anna Salai till Spencers, plus in the neighbourhoods on 28th July.
-Vehicles will not be allowed from Demellows Road to go through the Raja Muthiah Road. Similarly, vehicles from EVK Sampath Road and Jermiah Road junction towards Rajah Muthiah Road will also not be allowed.
-Commercial vehicles will not be allowed from EVR Road Gangureddy Road junction, Nair bridge junction, Gandhi Irwin Road junction towards Central.
-Those commercial vehicles coming from Broadway will be diverted via Kuralagam, Thanga Salai, Walltax Road to Mooulakothalam. These vehicles can take Vyasarpadi over bridge to reach their destinations.
The commuters have been urged to avoid these stretches and use alternate routes.
