Indore: A 20-year-old youth was allegedly manhandled, attacked, and abused by vigilantes for “hiding his identity” to watch a roadside Garba in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday. The youth was reportedly on his way back home after visiting his father’s grave.
Police booked Imran under Section 151 CrPC after taking the incident as an argument between locals. However, no action was taken against the ‘Garba goons’ who allegedly assaulted and heckled him, reported The Times of India (TOI).
It may be worth mentioning here that the Indore administration has not issued any directive making ID cards compulsory to entry into Garba venues.
Earlier on September 8, the state’s culture and tourism minister and MLA from Indore Usha Thakur had demanded that ID cards be made mandatory at Garba venues to prevent people from entering the events after hiding their identities to indulge in ‘love jihad’. She had said that Garbas had turned into a big way to carry out love jihad activity.
According to police, Imran was watching a Garba event on the roadside in Palsikar Colony of Indore when a group of men approached him and asked his identity. He allegedly tried to hide his identity. The men then asked for his ID card and started assaulting him, reported TOI.
The attackers alleged that Imran was passing inappropriate remarks at the girls performing the Garba. However, there is no official police complaint in this regard, police said.
Some of the video clips showing the group of men abusing Imran have surfaced but there is no footage of the alleged assault.
ACP Dishesh Agarwal said, as quoted by TOI, “A youth named Imran has been booked under section 151 CrPC after an argument with a group. The youth and the men had issues in the past which turned violent on Wednesday night. We have not received any complaint on molestation or eve-teasing."
This is the second such incident in two days at the Garba function in the Indore city of Madhya Pradesh.
Earlier on Tuesday, seven youths were manhandled by a group of men, who questioned their presence at the Garba event in Pandrinath, less than two kilometres from Palsikar Colony, on Tuesday night.
The group of men (no one from the organisers of the event) demanded the youths to produce their ID cards. The youths were later handed over to the police.
