KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of 2022 T20 World Cup
  • He will stay out of action for next 4-5 months
  • Mohammed Siraj is line to replace him in the T20I squad for SA series
Jasprit Bumrah is all but set to miss the 2022 T20 World Cup due to a back stress fracture. The right-arm pacer has been dealing with back problems for a few years, especially in 2022. He missed many matches this year, including the all-important Asia Cup, before making his comeback for the home series against Australia.
But Bumrah didn't walk into the playing XI directly and was rested for the first fixture. After playing the last two matches against Kangaroos, Bumrah was set to lead India's pace attack against South Africa. But he missed the opening game against Proteas as well.
A day later, PTI reported that the senior pacer is out of the ICC event. The BCCI had named Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar as pace-bowling standbys for the T20 WC and one of them is set to replace him. Since the Men in Blue are hosting SA, they need Bumrah's replacement for the bilateral series as well.
As per Cricbuzz, Mohammed Siraj is likely to take Bumrah's place. The right-arm pacer has 5 scalps in as many T20Is. His last T20I appearance came against Sri Lanka earlier this year. While he is a confirmed selection in Test cricket, Siraj isn't a regular in India's white-ball teams.
Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Deepak Chahar and Umesh Yadav are four other pacers in the T20I squad against SA. Umesh was benched for the first game while the other three pacers were part of the playing XI.
It remains to be seen if Team India is boosted by Shami's addition for the 2nd T20I or not. The right-arm pacer missed the Australia T20Is and the first game against SA due to COVID-19. He has now recovered from the infection and might join the team soon. The 2nd T20I of the series will be played in Guwahati on October 2.
