Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Police on Tuesday said the Muslim women who were held for allegedly vandalising the idol of goddess Durga at a pandal were of unsound mind.
“Four people - mother, father and the two women live together. They are mentally ill and have psychological issues. They returned from Jeddah in 2018 and were facing this since then. They have a brother, he is here,” said Rajesh, DCP Central Zone, Hyderabad.
The DCP said that they have registered a case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code.
“We have registered case under multiple sections of IPC. Now, we will record all statements. Since he (Asimuddin, accused's brother) said they have a mental issue, we referred them to government hospital and then will produce them before Magistrate. It's up to Magistrate, they will take a call,” the DCP said.
Asimuddin, the accused's brother, said that his mother and sisters have schizophrenia.
“I have not met my sisters yet but I've heard what happened so I've come down. My mother and sisters have schizophrenia... They are getting treatment at a hospital. So, I have to continue looking into this,” he added.
Earlier today, TRS leader Khaleequr Rehman said that the women were mentally unstable and ruled out any communal angle in the case.
"The police arrested the two women and after interrogating them, they found that they were mentally unstable. Doctors also examined their mental status and found that they were not in a mentally sound state. Let's not try to give any communal colour to this because there is no communal angle," he said.
