In a bid to promote electric vehicles in the Indian capital, the Delhi government has announced the launch of an open database facility for EV charging and battery-swapping stations on its Switch Delhi portal to unify EV players on a single platform.
The launch of the new portal opens EV customers' access to over 2,500 charging points in Delhi. “In 2021, the Delhi government came up with an open database for bus transit, which was a big success. The same is being used by Google, Uber and many more. With the launch of the open database for EV charging, Delhi is making a move towards solving the biggest problem of EV users, which is range anxiety,” said Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot.
The government further announced that the new portal will allow users to use their smartphone applications to locate the charging stations across Delhi. The number of charging points will also be ramped up currently from 2,500 units to 18,000 units by 2025. “It will enable them to use their favourite apps to locate more than 2,500 charging points and battery-swapping stations across Delhi and the number is expected to reach 18,000 by 2025,” added Gahlot.
In line with the previous mandate of the Delhi EV policy (August 7, 2020), the transport department has now put in place an open, publicly-owned database. This can be accessed by registered individuals/entities for information pertaining to public charging and swapping infrastructure through the government's portal. The database can be used for free by the in-vehicle navigation systems and charging apps and maps.
