Viral: Iranian women chop off hair in a symbolic act of opposition to the strict rule of wearing headscarves

Widespread protests have broken out on the streets of Tehran ever since the death of a 22-year-old woman, on Friday
The protests began after it was alleged Mahsa Amini died in police custody for not wearing a hijab properly in Tehran.
Amini was reportedly arrested by Iran's 'Morality Police' for leaving her hair partially uncovered. Reuters reported that she died on Friday after falling into a coma following her arrest.

To protest the strict rule that requires women in Iran over the age of seven to wear headscarves, many women have posted videos of themselves chopping off their own hair and burning their hijabs.
A compilation clip shared on Twitter by Iranian journalist, Masih Alinejad, shows several Iranian women chopping off their long logs in anger.

The video has now collected over 4.7 million views.
Alinejad wrote: "Iranian women show their anger by cutting their hair and burning their hijab to protest against the killing of #Mahsa_Amini by hijab police.
From the age of 7 if we don’t cover our hair we won’t be able to go to school or get a job. We are fed up with this gender apartheid regime."
#MahsaAmini has trended on Twitter and other platforms ever since the 22-year-old died. According to a Reuters report, the hashtag reached 1.8 million Twitter mentions
Iranian police said on Monday the death of Mahas Amini in custody was an 'unfortunate incident'. However, they denied accusations of mistreatment that are currently fuelling protests in Tehran, reported Reuters.
