Mumbai rains: As heavy showers continue, BMC orders to open beaches from 6 am to 10 am only

The Regional Meteorological Center-Mumbai in a tweet this morning said intense spells of rainfall are very likely over parts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar during the next 3-4 hours. Ghat areas of Pune and Satara are also expected to receive moderate to intense spells of rain.

Mumbai: Heavy rain continued to batter Mumbai for the fourth straight day on Thursday, leading to water-logging and traffic disruptions in most parts of the city. Due to incessant rain for the fourth consecutive day, a wall collapsed on a track, which led to delays in local train services on the Central Railway route.
Meanwhile, two persons were washed away in flood waters and one person was injured after a portion of his house collapsed following heavy rains in Maharashtra's Palghar district. Besides, this, at least 32 houses were also partially damaged in different talukas of Palghar as heavy showers continued on the day, an official from the district administration told news agency PTI.
The low-lying areas have been inundated and several roads have been blocked throwing normal life out of gear. On Wednesday, a heavy downpour triggered a landslide that struck a 'chawl' in the Chunabhatti area, injuring three people, including a 15-year-old boy. The civic officials said that a portion of a hill crashed on the two-storey Narayan Hadke chawl.

- IMD-Mumbai's Jayant Sarkar said orange alert has been issued for today while a red alert for tomorrow in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. In the last 3-4 days, he said, central Maharashtra and Konkan region received good rainfall due to favourable conditions of monsoon. "It will remain same for next 4-5 days," he said.
- For Mumbai, no immediate relief from heavy rain is in sight with the weather office predicting moderate to heavy rain and possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in the city.

- The weather department has issued a 'red alert' for south central Maharashtra from July 7-8. According to the forecast, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is very likely during this period. The 'red alert' has also been issued for south Konkan and Goa. For north Konkan, the IMD has issued an 'orange alert'.
- The department has also issued orange alerts for north central Maharashtra, east Vidarbha and west Vidarbha for Thursday and Friday. For the Marathwada region, the office has issued a 'yellow alert' forecasting heavy rainfall till July 8.
- Red alert has been issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg till July 9, while Palghar, Pune, Kolhapur and Satara are on red alert till July 8. Mumbai and Thane are on orange alert till July 10.
- A Central Railway official today informed that train operations were affected on the down (north-bound) track of the Harbour Line as a small portion of a wall collapsed on the track between Masjid and Sandhurst Road stations in south Mumbai, according to PTI.
- Heavy rainfall in Mumbai and Thane had also caused delay in the suburban train services by a minute.
- Mumbai has been hammered by heavy rain since July 4. In the last 24-hour, south Mumbai received an average 107 mm rainfall, while the eastern suburbs recorded 172 mm and western recorded 152 mm downpour.
The police official informed that traffic was disrupted due to water-logging near the Neelam Junction, Deonar, Mankhrud railway bridge, Everard Nagar, Antop Hill, Chembur, Dadar T T Junction, Hindmata junction, Sakkar Panchayat, Wadala, Kings Circle, Matunga, Kurla Kamani area and some other places, according to PTI.
In Palghar, at least 12 hamlets were cut off after a bridge - Pandartara - got flooded. The Pandartara bridge connects Usgaon in Vasai taluka.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday chaired a meeting where he directed the railway authorities and the BMC to appoint a nodal officer for coordination between them and for dissemination of information about water-logging and disruption of suburban train services in Mumbai, the news agency reported citing a statement from the chief minister's office (CMO).
